The Department of Communications requests consideration and approval of a proposal to change the Department’s name to “Department of Communication.”

The term “communication” has been associated with the academic study of communication for many years. “Communications” is considered a holdover from an era when the term was meant to represent the technologies and physical components used in the communication process.

The Department already uses the term without the “s” in several titles: Communication Arts (major), Communication Studies (academic sequence), and Mass Communication (major).
Renee Vandiver (rpvandiver) (Mon, 10 May 2021 16:20:41 GMT): Approved by Council of Academic Deans on 5/10/21.
