Proposal and rationale

In keeping with honors organizations at peer and aspirational institutions, the Delores and Weldon Cole Honors College proposes awarding Honors credit to undergraduate students for graduate level coursework. This curriculum change meets the needs of honors students by expanding opportunities to receive honors credit for coursework without imposing new additional burdens on academic departments. Encouraging enrollment in graduate courses also supports the degree offerings included in UNA’s Accelerated Master’s Program. The change in honors recognition would align UNA with two prominent honors entities in the state: the University of Alabama and the University of Alabama at Birmingham, both of which award honors credit to undergraduates for graduate level coursework. Peer and other institutions offering honors credit for graduate level coursework include the University of North Carolina-Pembroke, the University of Alabama at Huntsville, the University of Missouri-Kansas City, the University of Georgia, the University of Arizona, the University of Washington, and others.
