Accelerated Master's Program

The Department of Psychology and Sociology participates in UNA's Accelerated Master's Program (AMP) in collaboration with the Department of Counselor Education. The AMP permits qualified undergraduate students the opportunity to take up to 9 hours of graduate-level coursework in Counselor Education that may count as both elective sociology course credit and credit towards a graduate degree in a Counselor Education program. In order to be eligible for the AMP, students must meet the following criteria: (a) be a Sociology major, (b) have completed a minimum of 90 credit hours towards their undergraduate degree, (c) have an overall GPA of 3.0 (4.0 scale) at the time of entry into the AMP, (d) have earned an A or B on all coursework in the Sociology major, and (e) receive a simple majority approval vote from Sociology faculty having classroom (or similar) experience which permits an evaluation of academic potential. Final approval will be granted via the coordinators of the Family and Community Services and Counselor Education graduate programs.

Following acceptance into the AMP program, beginning in the summer of their senior year, participants will be eligible to take Human Growth and Development (CHD 604).  Students may also take Fundamentals of Counseling (CHD 602) in the fall, followed by either Social and Cultural Diversity in Counseling (CHD 615) or Assessment in Counseling (CHD 621) in the spring. Students must earn a B or higher in graduate-level coursework to earn graduate credit and continue in the AMP program. Grades of a C or lower will still count towards the undergraduate sociology degree requirements. Acceptance into the AMP program does not guarantee admission into a Counselor Education graduate degree program. AMP participants will still be required to apply and satisfy all admission criteria required of other applicants to the Counselor Education degree programs.
